I N F O C U S :

ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM

This month VANGUARDGIRL investigates Abstract expressionism, a term applied to new forms of abstract art developed by American painters working in the 1940s and 1950s. Why were these artists grouped together when they worked in such a wide variety of ways? And how did they come to represent the moment America dominated the art world?

Find out more through a selection of short essays, key terms, themes and works as well as artist biographies of the main figures that pioneered Abstract Expressionism and the critics who championed them.
